GENDER AND JEWELLERY PROJECT

The Project
Gender and Jewellery is about connecting with gender diverse people to discuss their relationship with jewellery and to swap/up-cycle jewellery to suit participants’ gender expression.
Participation
I am seeking participants who are transgender and gender non-binary in the greater Brisbane area. Participants may be at any stage of transition or closetedness. Participants must be willing to be interviewed about their opinion of and experience with jewellery and will ideally be able to meet in person to discuss and exchange pieces of jewellery.
Participants will not be charged for the donated or upcycled jewellery they receive but may be asked to help cover material costs if they desire new pieces.
Donation
All of the jewellery available to participants of the project have been donated with donations coming primarily from the trans community. If you would like to donate jewellery to the project feel free to contact me.
Aims
I aim for this project to be a net positive for the gender diverse community as well as for my studies.
I am a third year Fine Art undergraduate studying Jewellery and Small Objects at the Queensland College of Art through Griffith University.
I consider myself gender ambivalent and am interested in exploring and aiding my local gender diverse community.
Jewellery, like fashion as a whole, is deeply tied to gender expression.
I aim to explore how a shift in one’s gender expression effects a person’s relationship to their jewellery. I understand that for some people this may be a radical change and others may not see a change at all. It is important to me to understand these experiences on a personal level. As such, I want to interview a number of transgender and non-binary people about their jewellery tastes and how/if their trans-ness has effected it. After the interview, I will ask the participants if they would like jewellery from the collection that has been donated and/or if they would like something, either from the collection or their own jewellery refurbished/recycled into something better suited for them. They would also be asked if they have any jewellery they would like to donate to the collection for the use of other trans and non-binary people.
While I would like to have this project open to as many people as possible, I will have to limit it to a relatively low number of participants who live in or around the Brisbane area as I have limited time and energy and resources to create these works.
I aim for this project to be free for participants. For refurbished/recycled pieces, I would absorb the cost of additional materials. For more extensive pieces, I will ask, with the participant’s permission, for a portion of the additional material costs to be covered by them.
There is potential for this project to continue beyond the formal end date if there is sufficient interest from the community.
